Somewhere Known was inspired by a cathedral in the heart of Oslo — not for what it was, but for how it felt. During my first white Christmas in Norway, I kept returning to it without quite knowing why. There was a quiet stillness in the way it stood, a kind of presence that felt grounding and familiar. Built up slowly with charcoal, layered acrylic, and palette knife texture, this piece holds the feeling of that moment — steady, calm, and gently known.

More about this piece….

There’s a cathedral in the heart of Oslo — strong and still, like it’s holding something sacred even if you don’t believe in those kinds of things. I’m not religious, but I do believe in beauty. In places that gather people together — not because of what they’re meant to be, but because of what they quietly become.

During a family trip to Norway — my first white Christmas — we stayed just a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Oslo. We wandered through the city every day, and most days, I found myself drawn back to this one building. I couldn’t quite explain it — it wasn’t about the cathedral’s purpose, but the way it stood there, quietly holding space.

This piece began with charcoal and built slowly with layers of acrylic and palette knife work — an attempt to capture what I felt, more than what I saw. A moment of stillness, awe, and connection I’ll never forget.

More Information on Prints

This artwork was originally created using acrylic on canvas, with soft charcoal markings beneath layered textures and palette knife finishes.

You’re purchasing a fine art print, made using archival inks on museum-grade paper. The paper has a soft, tactile quality that holds the depth and detail of the original beautifully. All of my fine art prints are created using Epson printers capable of exceptional colour depth, with archival-grade inks on Ilford Galerie Textured Cotton Rag 310gsm — a museum-quality paper with a soft, painterly feel.

This beautiful 100% cotton rag matte paper has a subtle texture that becomes part of the image itself, enhancing lighter areas and giving the piece dimension. It’s designed for lasting image stability and crisp detail — so you can enjoy your piece for many years to come.

Each print is hand-packaged in my home studio in the Perth Hills, using minimal plastic and materials chosen with care for the environment.

The original artwork will be part of an upcoming exhibition in 2026 and will be available for purchase then. Stay updated by subscribing to the MK Collectors.
